A Spotlight on the Comedian Elf Lyons: The Comedy Queen of Quirk

Step into the vibrant world of comedy and get ready to be dazzled by the one and only Elf Lyons. This extraordinary performer has a style that's all her own—quirky, imaginative, and overflowing with infectious energy. In this blog post, we're diving into the life and journey of the fantastic comedian Elf Lyons, exploring what makes her shine in the bustling world of comedy.

Elf Lyons is not just your run-of-the-mill comedian – she's a multi-talented dynamo who's been making waves in the world of comedy, clowning, and theater for over a decade. When she's not rocking the stage with her solo shows across the globe, Elf is busy directing and sharing her artistic wisdom with aspiring talents worldwide.

In the delightful year of 2023, Elf snagged the 25th spot in The Telegraph's '50 Best Comedians of the 21st Century.' Plus, she earned a nod for the Deaf Action Award for Deaf Excellence for her comedy gem, "Heist," co-created with the visually expressive Duffy.

Hailing from the heart of London, Elf is on a mission to blur the lines between comedy, theater, and performance art. She's had the pleasure of collaborating on imaginative projects with cool places like the Barbican, the British Library, the London Science Museum, the Royal Society of Literature, and the City of London, just to name-drop a few.

Since 2017, Elf's solo ventures have been a wild ride, featuring everything from reenacting classical ballet with everyday objects to belting out musicals about the economy while dressed as a lion. Picture a mime show about a bank robbery and a comedy horror extravaganza inspired by Stephen King – that's the magic of Elf Lyons!

Awards and nominations? Oh, she's got 'em. From the Edinburgh Comedy Award to the Malcolm Hardee Award for Comic Originality, Elf's mantle is lined with accolades. In 2018, she even snagged Adelaide Fringe's Pick of the Fringe. And let's not forget her collaboration with Helen Duff in "Unlikely Darlings," making it to The Telegraph's 50 Best Cultural Moments of 2020.

But Elf is not just a performer; she's a teacher with a heart for spreading laughter and wisdom. She's crafted her teaching chops in secondary education and universities, leading comedy and clowning courses. Currently, she's the maestro behind Soho Theatre's Comedy Labs Plus course and a visiting tutor at Rose Bruford University. Elf's also a globetrotting educator, sharing the joy of clowning with folks all over the UK and Europe.

Did we mention she's a fantastic writer too? Elf's penned pieces for The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph, The Independent, Londonist, Cosmopolitan Magazine, and Refinery29. From ethical non-monogamy to the power of horror and everything in between, she's got the write stuff.

And let's not forget the airwaves! Elf's a sought-after guest on podcasts and radio shows, chatting about everything from polyamory to economics. Catch her on Classical Fix (BBC Radio 3), Loose Ends (BBC Radio 4), and a bunch of other cool shows. You might even stumble upon her on The Breakfast Show and Culture Hour (Times Radio) and The Colin Murray Show (BBC Radio 5).

Growing up, Elf was encouraged to express herself, setting the stage for her love of performance. During her time at Bristol University, where she studied drama and French, Lyons started dipping her toes into the world of stand-up comedy. Post-graduation, she took her talents to L'Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris, learning the ropes from the renowned clown teacher Philippe Gaulier.

Elf Lyons' comedy is a breath of fresh air. Blending clowning with traditional stand-up, her performances are a delightful mix of humor and intellect. Expect elaborate costumes, props, and physical comedy, all served with a side of surrealism that keeps audiences laughing and guessing.

Her breakthrough moment happened at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017 with 'Swan,' a one-woman parody of Swan Lake delivered in French-accented English. The show earned a nomination for the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show, a remarkable achievement for only her second solo performance at the festival.

Since then, Lyons has continued to captivate audiences with shows like 'ChiffChaff,' a musical comedy about economics, and 'Love Songs to Guinea Pigs,' a heartwarming exploration of love and loneliness, touring internationally.

What makes Elf Lyons stand out is her knack for blending highbrow concepts with lowbrow humor. Tackling complex topics with accessibility and entertainment, her shows are a rollercoaster of unexpected twists and turns.

Inclusivity is at the heart of Lyons' performances, incorporating sign language for deaf audience members and openly discussing her bisexuality in her routines, providing representation for the LGBTQ+ community.

Elf Lyons is not just a comedian; she's a force of nature. With her distinctive style and fearless approach to comedy, she has rightfully earned her place as one of the most exciting talents in the comedy scene today.
