Comedian Michael Odewale Comedy Headshot

10 years on, Michael Odewale's stagecraft is unmatched.

Michael Odewale is an incredible BAFTA-winning Writer/Performer, who's taken the comedy world by storm!

In the bustling, often chaotic world of stand-up comedy, performers typically fall into one of two camps. There are the high-energy jesters, the ones who command a stage with frantic movement and booming delivery. And then there are the thinkers – the comedians who draw you in not with volume, but with the quiet confidence of their craft. In this second, rarefied group, you’ll find Michael Odewale, standing coolly at its centre.

If you’ve had the pleasure of catching one of Odewale’s sets, you’ll know exactly what we mean. He strolls onto the stage with an unflappable, laid-back demeanour that is instantly disarming. There’s no nervous energy, no desperate plea for your attention. Instead, he exudes a sense of calm that says, "Don't worry, I've got this." And believe us, he absolutely has.

This understated delivery is his secret weapon. It creates an intimate atmosphere, making a packed comedy club feel more like a chat with a brilliantly funny mate down the pub. He doesn't hammer you with punchlines; he carefully builds intricate, observational narratives, and the laughter that follows is all the more rewarding for it. It’s a style that demands you lean in and listen, and the payoff is always, without fail, spectacular. While some comics use a sledgehammer, Odewale wields a scalpel, dissecting topics with a precision and wit that is simply a joy to behold.

But a unique delivery style is only half the story. The true genius of Michael Odewale lies in his material. His comedy is a masterclass in modern observation, tackling everything from his British-Nigerian heritage and family dynamics to the absurdities of gentrification and the baffling logic of social media. He has an incredible knack for taking complex, often sensitive subjects and rendering them universally hilarious.

He kicked off his comedy journey at the University of Greenwich, polishing his skills at the famous Up The Creek and made it to the finals of the Chortle Student Comedy Awards. Talk about talent!

His debut show, #BlackBearsMatter, was an absolute hit, winning Best Show at the 2019 Leicester Comedy Festivals and earning heaps of praise at the Edinburgh Fringe 2019,. Michael even got nominated for Best Newcomer in the Dave Edinburgh Comedy Awards!

In 2022, he released his very first stand-up special, "Michael Odewale: Live at Soho Theatre," exclusively on Amazon Prime. And since then, he's been busy working on some awesome shows like Dreaming Whilst Black (BBC), Cunk on Earth (BBC), Attack of the Hollywood Cliches (Netflix), and Death to 2022 (Netflix).

His talents have graced some big stages too! From Live at The Apollo (BBC), Mock the Week (BBC) to Ben Elton’s Friday Night Live (C4) and Live from The Moth Club (Dave), he's been making audiences roar with laughter.

Michael also co-hosts the Btec Philosophers podcast with fellow Comedy in Your Eye Pupil, Elliot Steel, adding a philosophical twist to everyday topics.

Throughout 2024, Odewale continued to be a formidable presence on the live circuit, performing at numerous comedy festivals and touring his new show, Of Mike and Men. This show saw him return to the Edinburgh Fringe, where he mused on his life experiences with his signature wit. His sought-after writing skills were also put to use on the new series of Cunk On... and another episode of The Cleaner, showcasing his value as both a performer and a top-tier comedy writer.

So far in 2025, Odewale's hard work has been met with industry recognition, as he won 'Best Headliner' at the prestigious Chortle Awards. He has remained a prolific live performer, appearing at major events like the Leicester, Brighton, and Bristol Comedy Gardens, and has already featured on Comedy Central Live. As the year progresses, he has a packed schedule of live dates at top comedy clubs and festivals across the country, continuing to cement his reputation as one of the sharpest and most consistent voices in British comedy.

Michael's stagecraft full of precision and finesse and raw, genuine voice truly sets him apart from his comedy peers.
