A Comedy Legend's Return to Edinburgh

From Accountant to Alternative Icon
Brown's journey into comedy began later in life, at the age of 42. He was part of the groundbreaking alternative comedy scene that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His distinctive laid-back style provided a unique contrast to the more boisterous acts of the time, making him a standout performer.
Brown was a pioneer in the alternative comedy scene.
He won the Edinburgh Comedy Award (formerly the Perrier Award) in 1987.
He performed as a support act for Frank Sinatra at Ibrox Park in 1990.
He has appeared in Stewart Lee's "Comedy Vehicle.
Early Days and the Comedy Store
Despite a lifelong habit of writing jokes and cartoon ideas, Brown's comedic career didn't take off until the Comedy Store opened in London in 1979. He recalls his first performance there as a "free for all," where he was initially "gonged off" but returned the next night, quipping about public demand.
Edinburgh Fringe Beginnings
Brown first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1983, a time when stand-up was just beginning to gain a foothold at the festival. He shared the stage with other notable comedians like Norman Lovett and Helen Lederer. He acknowledges the significant impact of comedians like Alexei Sayle in shifting the festival's comedic landscape.
The Perrier Award and Beyond
Winning the Perrier Award in 1987 for his show "Brown Blues" was a significant achievement, though Brown notes the recognition was more subdued at the time compared to later winners. His career has also included memorable moments like supporting Frank Sinatra, where he managed to win over the crowd with a witty remark about "Fly me to Dunoon."
"Are You Feeling Funny?" Podcast
Brown is enthusiastic about his new podcast, "Are You Feeling Funny?" He serves as a comedy consultant for the project, which features a stellar lineup of contemporary comedians, including Jamali Maddix, Isy Suttie, Phil Wang, Adam Kay, and Zoe Lyons. Brown expresses his excitement in analyzing comedy and observing how comedians today integrate their heritage and lifestyle into their stage personas, a practice he himself pioneered in the early alternative scene.
