Ten places are available for "mid-level" comedy creatives with at least one previous credit.
Successful applicants receive £5,000, up to £10,000 in paid shadowing, and a dedicated mentor.
The scheme aims to foster talent from diverse backgrounds and regions across the UK.
Nurturing Future Comedy Stars
The BBC Comedy Collective, now in its fourth year, is a "supercharged bursary scheme" designed to provide a significant boost to those looking to advance their careers in scripted comedy. The initiative offers ten places, welcoming a diverse range of creatives including writers, writer/performers, producers, directors, and editors.
What The Bursary Offers
Selected participants will benefit from a comprehensive package aimed at accelerating their professional development. Each bursary winner will receive:
A £5,000 development grant.
Up to £10,000 worth of paid shadowing opportunities on BBC Comedy productions.
An allocated production mentor.
A dedicated point of contact within the BBC Comedy Commissioning team.
Access to Collective ambassadors and industry events, with all expenses covered.
Eligibility and Application Process
This is not an entry-level opportunity. Applicants must have at least one previous credit in writing, producing, or directing across any platform, including TV, radio, theatre, podcasts, stand-up, short films, or commercials. A strong passion for and commitment to comedy is essential. For editors, the scheme specifically targets Edit Assistants or Assistant Editors looking to transition into scripted comedy, requiring professional commitment and a passion for narrative comedy.
The application window runs from Wednesday, April 8th, 2026, to Wednesday, May 6th, 2026. The chosen cohort will be announced during the Edinburgh TV Festival in August 2026.
A Legacy of Support
The BBC Comedy Collective boasts a strong track record, with past delegates achieving BAFTA-winning series, securing multiple script commissions, gaining agents, and landing significant directing and production credits. The scheme is supported by a network of industry ambassadors, including director Christine Gernon, editor Gareth Heal, and producer Ash Atalla, alongside representatives honouring comedy legends like Felix Dexter, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, and Caroline Aherne.
Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy at the BBC, emphasised the scheme's role in opening doors: "It's about opening doors and helping the next wave of voices find their place in the comedy community. We're thrilled to launch the search for this year's cohort."
Regional Focus and Industry Collaboration
In an effort to broaden access and reflect the UK's diverse talent pool, at least one place is guaranteed for individuals based in Liverpool (the host city for the BBC Comedy Festival 2026), Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. The initiative is further bolstered by collaborations with numerous industry partners, including production companies, post-production houses, and screen agencies, all committed to supporting the next generation of comedy talent.
