BBC comedy Rewarding gets first look ahead of autumn debut

The BBC has unveiled first-look images from Rewarding, a six-part sitcom starring Blue Lights actor Hannah McClean and comedian Vittorio Angelone. Set in social care, it pairs an optimistic newcomer with a more pragmatic veteran as they support clients and navigate the challenges of working together. The series is due this autumn.

Key takeaways

  • Rewarding follows support workers Sinead, played by Hannah McClean, and Francis, played by Vittorio Angelone.

  • The six half-hour episodes are set to arrive on BBC iPlayer and BBC Northern Ireland this autumn.

  • The cast includes disabled, neurodivergent and learning disabled performers in key roles, with lived experience informing the show’s approach to care.

  • The sitcom grew from a short pilot developed through the Green Lit scheme.

The premise puts workplace friction alongside the everyday realities of care, giving the comedy room for both awkward encounters and more tender moments. For fans who enjoy finding performers early, that mix of emerging talent and familiar faces is part of the appeal—whether on screen or at a live show such as Comedy in Your Eye’s intimate weekly sets in Camden.

A workplace comedy shaped by social care

Sinead is a new support worker whose idealism and energy make her determined to help. Francis has been in the job longer and approaches its demands with realism and a practical streak. They are committed to their clients, even if getting on with one another proves harder.

The wider cast includes Bernadette Brown as Fidelma, Joanne Crawford as Nicola and Fáolan Morgan as Cyril, alongside the people they support: Cal, played by Lee Snodgrass; Martina, played by Faith Alabi; and Joe, played by John Moffat. Snodgrass appeared in the original pilot, while Rewarding marks Moffat’s first television acting role. The production says performers with disabilities and neurodivergence feature in key roles, helping bring authenticity and nuance to its portrayal of social care.

From pilot to six-part series

Rewarding began as a short pilot developed for BBC Northern Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen’s Green Lit initiative, which supports emerging screen talent in Northern Ireland. After the pilot was selected as part of the scheme’s 2025 broadcast slate, the idea progressed into a six-episode commission.

Conker Pictures, part of Banijay UK, is producing the series with support from Northern Ireland Screen. Writing is shared by Matthew McDevitt, Paddy Campbell and Faebian Averies, with David Moody directing and Stacey Quigley producing. The project also reflects how comedy talent can develop across formats: viewers might first encounter a performer through a TV series, then catch the spontaneity of live stand-up at a friendly local venue like Comedy in Your Eye.

Where and when to watch

The series is scheduled to stream on BBC iPlayer and BBC Northern Ireland this autumn. In the United States, it will be available later in the year through Wonder Project’s subscription service on Prime Video. Banijay Rights is handling international distribution.
