Comedian - Ben Pope - Comedy: The Cambridge Footlights President Turned Stand-Up Star

Ben Pope is a comedian who arrived on the circuit with an impeccable pedigree and has more than lived up to the promise. A stand-up, writer, actor, and musician, Ben is a former President of the legendary Cambridge Footlights (2013-14), a role that has historically been a launchpad for some of the biggest names in British comedy. Over the last decade, he has established himself as a classy, stylish, and accomplished performer with a knack for crafting critically-acclaimed shows.

Background and Comedic Style

Ben’s comedy is a delightful blend of witty storytelling and relatable observations, delivered with what The Scotsman calls "consistently funny and deceptively thoughtful" material. His style is often described as charming and energetic, with

Chortle noting that he "has all the comedian's tools and he knows how to use them". His background with the Footlights, where he wrote and performed in numerous acclaimed sketch shows, has given him a polished stage presence and a sharp writing ability that sets him apart.

He is also one-third of the cult sketch group Princes of Main, whose show New Year's Eve had a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe before transferring to London's Soho Theatre, with The Telegraph declaring that "the future of sketch comedy is in safe hands".

A String of Acclaimed Shows and Achievements

Ben has been a fixture at the Edinburgh Fringe for years, bringing a series of critically-acclaimed solo hours to the festival. His shows Baby Sasquatch (2018) and Dancing Bear (2019) were both hits, praised for their clever construction and consistent laughs. His 2023 show, Holy Cow, embarked on a nationwide tour of the UK and New Zealand, including a run at the Soho Theatre, and was lauded by Joe Lycett as simply "excellent".

His talent has been recognised in numerous competitions. He was a finalist in the prestigious So You Think You're Funny? competition in 2015 and went on to win Piccadilly Comedy Club New Comedian of the Year in 2017. This combination of critical acclaim and peer recognition demonstrates his standing as a top-tier performer. A former Cambridge Footlights President, comedian Ben Pope has become a master of witty, relatable, and consistently funny comedy.

Writing, Performing, and Social Media

Beyond his live stand-up, Ben is a prolific writer with credits for BBC Radio 4's The News Quiz and DMs Are Open. He has also appeared on television on Comedy Central's

Achievement Unlocked and Dave's Comedy Guide to Life, and has provided tour support for acts like Nick Mohammed (as Mr. Swallow) and Kieran Hodgson.

Ben has a strong online presence, with two of his full-length shows, Mr Big Stuff (2022) and Holy Cow (2024), available to watch for free on his YouTube channel, where they have amassed over 56,000 views. He also engages with his audience through his newsletter,

Lo!, which features his writing alongside illustrations. In a testament to his multifaceted life, when he's not on stage or writing jokes, he manages an independent bookshop in Peckham, adding another layer to his charmingly erudite persona.
