Who is Eddie Izzard?

Suzy Eddie Izzard, born Edward John Izzard on 7 February 1962 in Aden, Yemen, is a British stand-up comedian, actor, and activist of international renown. Her early life was itinerant; after her family left Yemen, they moved to Northern Ireland and Wales, before settling in England. Her mother died when Eddie was young, a tragedy she has cited as a driving force behind her need to perform.

Izzard is known for her fluid gender identity and recently introduced the name "Suzy" while maintaining the public moniker Eddie Izzard. She is a true polymath: she has run 43 marathons in 51 days for Sport Relief, performed comedy in four languages (French, German, Spanish, and Arabic), and built a serious acting career in Hollywood films like Ocean's Twelve and Valkyrie. She is also a dedicated political activist for the Labour Party.

Eddie Izzard's comedy style

Eddie Izzard's comedy is a genre unto itself, often described as "surrealist history" or "stream-of-consciousness." Unlike many observational comics, Izzard rarely tells jokes about her personal life in a linear fashion. Instead, she weaves elaborate, whimsical narratives that jump effortlessly between topics: from the Death Star Canteen to the Spanish Inquisition, to badgers, to God.

Her delivery is rambling yet precise, often using "mumbling" and mimicry to create characters on the spot. In Hamlet, she channels this chameleon-like ability into high drama. By playing all roles—men, women, ghosts—she uses her physicality and vocal range to make Shakespeare's text accessible and electric. Dame Judi Dench described her performance as "spectacular".

Eddie Izzard's comedy career

Eddie Izzard's career began as a street performer in London's Covent Garden in the 1980s, where she learned to hold a crowd.

  • The 90s Breakthrough: Shows like Live at the Ambassadors (1993) and Glorious (1997) made her a star. Dress to Kill (1998) won her two Emmy Awards and broke her into the US market.

  • Global Tours: She was the first stand-up to perform a solo show at the Hollywood Bowl. Her tour Force Majeure was one of the most extensive comedy tours ever, visiting 45 countries.

  • Acting and Drama: Beyond comedy, she has starred in the TV series The Riches and numerous films. Her recent turn to solo theatre with Dickens' Great Expectations and now Hamlet marks a new phase of serious theatrical work.

What is Eddie Izzard's net worth

Eddie Izzard's net worth is estimated to be approximately £15 million to £20 million. This fortune has been amassed through decades of global touring, film and television roles, and wise investments. In 2022, she donated her entire £125,000 winnings from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to charity.
