Harry Enfield and Freddie Meredith Tee Off in New Golf Comedy 'Albatross'

Comedy legends Harry Enfield and Freddie Meredith are set to star in 'Albatross', a new short film with feature potential that explores grief through the unusual act of gifting golfers holes-in-one. The film, currently in post-production, is slated for festival screenings next year.

Key Takeaways

  • Harry Enfield and Freddie Meredith lead the cast of the new golf comedy short film, 'Albatross'.

  • The film centres on a man coping with grief by secretly ensuring golfers achieve holes-in-one.

  • 'Albatross' is being developed as a potential feature film or television series.

A Heartfelt Round

'Albatross' follows Ronnie, played by Freddie Meredith, who finds solace from his grief by sneaking onto golf courses. His unique method of coping involves stealing golfers' balls and placing them directly into the hole, thereby gifting them an improbable hole-in-one. Director James Kibbey, who co-wrote the script with Mark Smith, explained that Ronnie "bathes in the joy of other people as a way of combatting his mental turmoil."

Harry Enfield makes a memorable appearance as a figure who seems to materialise "like a mirage over the crest of the fairway" towards the film's conclusion. Comedians Ellie White and Steen Raskopoulos round out the cast, portraying a golfing couple whose lives become unexpectedly intertwined with Ronnie's peculiar mission.

Behind the Scenes

The film was shot at Pinner Hill golf course in Middlesex during the summer. Kibbey, a seasoned golfer himself, collaborated with Smith, a relative newcomer to the sport, on the script. The project evolved from Smith's initial concept for a mockumentary about course intruders into a more "heartfelt" narrative addressing grief and male relationships, using the golf course as a setting where men often connect indirectly.

Future Prospects

Produced by Dave Birchall for You Boy Films and Kibbey's Black Shark Media, 'Albatross' is envisioned as more than just a short film. Kibbey and his team are actively developing it for a feature-length movie or a television series. They believe the character of Ronnie is strong and distinctive enough to explore further, potentially expanding his altruistic endeavours beyond the golf course. Kibbey noted that Ronnie is inspired by his hero, Princess Diana, and that his altruism brings him vicarious joy, suggesting ample narrative potential.

Kibbey, known for his work on a Ted Lasso promo and an Adidas commercial featuring Lionel Messi, expressed his excitement about securing Enfield, calling him a "bona fide comedy legend" and a hero to many in British comedy. Meredith, who has recently appeared in 'Such Brave Girls' and 'Big Boys', was also praised for his comedic talent and acting ability.
